How Your First Bowen Treatment Will Likely Look

What can you expect during a treatment?

If you have a good experience from the first interactions, it will affect the outcome, so when you first make contact – by contact form, e-mail or phone – we will strive to book you in as soon as possible.
Once your booking is confirmed, you will receive a confirmation with date, time and location, and an intake form to complete. This form is completely confidential and essential in planning your Bowen session. You will receive a reminder the day or two before your appointment.

After a quick hello and necessary conversation, we eagerly get you on the table where you lay face down, fully dressed – hopefully in something loose and comfortable – now you can go visit those clouds we talked about earlier 😉

We will palpate (that’s fancy for have a good feel) from head to toe, here we are getting familiar with your fascia, learning where your tension areas are and looking for asymmetry and obvious locations to release. We will also be asking for your feedback so we can be specific in our Bowen moves.

Now we can move onto the Bowen moves, these will range from light to firm in pressure and often follow the same pattern across your body. Many of the moves are specifically located to release common trigger points and can result in a surprising ooohhhh sound from you. This is totally normal and you’ll find these sensations have happened before the Bowen move has been completed and you will feel a strange but pleasurable tingling sensation and a feeling of release. This is when we will pause in the treatment to allow that move to process. Your job is to breathe slowly and enjoy the feeling. Many experience a sense of tension or stress melting away.

This is also a point in the treatment where many Bowen Therapists will step out of the room to allow you to process the moves with no distraction. We prefer to stay in the room with you and, while we will wait a few minutes before starting the next moves, we will work on a different part of the body to allow full processing of the Bowen move.

This process continues with specific Bowen moves depending on your reason for visiting. Some of the move sequences will be repeated, especially in areas needing greatest release.
After around 35 minutes, you will turn over to lay on your back. Sometimes you may be asked to walk around for a few minutes first, or have a sip of water, especially if this is your first Bowen treatment.
Now we target specific areas on the front of you, again, repeating any we need to, and end the session with neck and head moves – these feel amazing!

We will indicate that the treatment is complete, or we may position you differently for additional moves or stretches. After taking another short stroll around the treatment table, we will check in with you to make sure you’re feeling fabulous and book in for your follow up or maintenance session. The you will float off into the rest of your day, as an official member of the feel good club 🙂
